If you’re planning a home birth, I get it.

I believe in birth. I believe women are incredibly capable, and I believe there is something really special about being able to labor and give birth in the comfort and familiarity of your own home.

And I don’t just understand home birth because I’m a doula. I’ve lived it.

I’m Mary Piasecki, a Christian birth doula based in Clarkston, Michigan. I’ve been supporting families through birth since 2018 and have attended more than 130 births in homes, hospitals, and birth centers throughout Southeast Michigan.

But before I was supporting other women through their births, I had my own experiences that shaped the way I approach this work.

I’ve Been the Home Birth Mom

I planned home births myself.

I’ve had a beautiful, successful home birth.

I’ve also had a home birth transfer to the hospital, including the ambulance ride that I certainly hadn’t pictured when I was dreaming about how my birth would go.

So when I tell you that I get it, I really do.

I understand why you want to give birth at home. I understand wanting fewer interventions, wanting to be in your own space, trusting the process of birth, and wanting a birth team that believes in your body right alongside you.

But I also understand the other side.

Sometimes plans change.

Sometimes the safest or wisest next step is not the one you wanted.

And if that happens, you deserve someone beside you who doesn't suddenly treat your birth like it failed.

I Believe in Birth, Not in Proving Something

This is a big part of how I support home-birth families.

I believe deeply in physiological birth. I believe in giving labor time and space when mom and baby are doing well. I believe movement, positioning, rest, environment, and good support matter.

But I don't believe your worth as a mother is measured by where or how you give birth.

My goal isn't to help you achieve a home birth at all costs.

My goal is to support you as you pursue the birth you're hoping for while working alongside a skilled birth team and adapting if circumstances change.

A transfer isn't a failure. A change of plans isn't a failure. And needing more help than you expected isn't a failure.

I've been there.

What Does a Doula Do at a Home Birth?

Your midwife is there to care for the clinical needs of you and your baby. As your doula, my focus is different: I'm there for you.

During labor, that might mean counterpressure through contraction after contraction, helping you find a position that finally feels right, getting you into the shower or birth pool, reminding you to rest and eat, helping create a peaceful environment, or simply sitting beside you when what you need most is a calm presence.

My approach to labor comes back again and again to three things:

Rest. Movement. Balance.

Sometimes you need movement.

Sometimes you need rest.

Sometimes we need to change what we're doing entirely.

Birth isn't a formula, and I don't treat it like one.

And Your Partner Still Gets to Be Your Partner

A doula doesn't replace your husband or partner.

You know and love each other in a way I never could. I bring experience with birth so your partner doesn't have to suddenly become the birth expert in the room.

I can help them know where to put their hands, suggest comfort measures, remind them of things we discussed prenatally, and give them permission to grab food, use the bathroom, or close their eyes for a little while during a long labor.

You know each other. I know birth. We work together.

Christian Home Birth Support

My Christian faith is a huge part of who I am, and I especially love supporting families who want their faith woven into their birth experience.

If you want prayer during labor, let's pray.

If you want worship music playing while you labor, turn it up.

If you need someone to remind you of truth when you're exhausted and wondering whether you can keep going, I'm there.

You absolutely do not have to share my faith to hire me. I support every family with compassion and respect. But if having a Christian doula matters to you, you don't have to explain that part of yourself to me.

I understand.

What If We Transfer to the Hospital?

Then we go to the hospital.

Because I've personally experienced a home birth transfer, this part of doula support is especially important to me.

A transfer can bring a lot of emotions with it, especially when you've spent months imagining giving birth at home. Things can suddenly feel fast, unfamiliar, medical, or simply very different from what you prepared for.

I'm there to help you stay grounded through that transition.

We take the next step. We ask questions. We understand our options. We adjust.

Your birth story is still yours.

I'm based in Clarkston, Michigan and support home-birth families throughout the surrounding Southeast Michigan area, including Waterford, Lake Orion, Holly, Rochester Hills, and surrounding communities.

I work with select home-birth midwives and believe strongly in having a skilled, responsible birth team.

Because your home becomes the place I'm traveling to when you're in labor, home-birth availability depends on your location and birth team.

Prenatal appointments are generally available within approximately one hour of Clarkston. If you're farther away, we can discuss virtual prenatal appointments or meeting somewhere closer.
