Pregnancy is such a mix of emotions: excitement, anticipation, and, at times, overwhelming fear. I’ve experienced all of these, sometimes all at once. Each pregnancy has taught me something new about leaning on God, but none more so than the one where fear became my constant companion for a season.
When we found out we were expecting a baby girl, my heart was full of joy. By March, we were celebrating the news of her gender, and by April, it was time for the anatomy scan. If you’ve ever had a complicated pregnancy or a history of scary diagnoses, you’ll understand how anxiety can creep in, even when everything seems fine.
With my first baby, we discovered a potential heart condition at her anatomy scan. Her heart rate slowed down significantly, and for a month, we endured weekly check-ups, anxiously waiting for answers. One appointment was so frightening they nearly sent me to the hospital, but by the grace of God, the next day’s fetal echocardiogram confirmed her heart was perfectly healthy—“textbook,” as they put it.
That month was one of the most stressful of my life. Even though the outcome was good, the trauma of those weeks stayed with me. I’ve always been grateful my baby was okay, but I am deeply aware that not every family gets that same outcome. Some of our dear friends have walked the hard road of open-heart surgeries for their tiny babies. We count ourselves blessed, but that doesn’t erase the fear we felt during those long weeks of uncertainty.
Fast forward to my second pregnancy, and fear found its way back in.
The day of my anatomy scan, I was nervous but trying my best to stay positive. My husband, Philip, and I planned to grab lunch afterward, hoping to make a day of it. As we drove to the hospital, I babbled nervously to fill the silence. When I’m anxious, I talk—a lot.
During the scan, I chatted with the tech, asking her about her life, her work, anything to distract myself. She reassured us that the baby looked great. I breathed a sigh of relief, grateful for good news. But then, her tone changed.
“Have you ever been told you had anything on your ovaries?” she asked.
“No… I don’t think so?” I replied, confused. She turned off the light and quietly said she needed to grab the doctor.
My heart sank.
When she returned, she said they needed another image of my ovaries. That’s when I knew. They found something.
Panic set in. Philip tried to reassure me, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. My mind raced. I peeled off my gel manicure one nail at a time. I paced the room, heart pounding as I spiraled deeper into fear.
Minutes dragged by like hours. My Apple Watch kept buzzing, warning me that my heart rate was too high. I couldn’t sit still. Every fiber of my being was screaming, This is not fine.
Finally, after 30 excruciating minutes, a doctor came in. He introduced himself, but I didn’t catch his name. Before he could get through pleasantries, I blurted out, “Do I have cancer?”
His response shook me to my core: “We don’t know.”
In that moment, fear consumed me.

Fear has a way of taking over, especially during pregnancy, when you’re already carrying so much physically, emotionally, and spiritually. But one thing I’ve learned through these experiences is that fear doesn’t have to win. God’s Word is full of truth and promises that can anchor us when fear feels overwhelming.
If you’re walking through a season of uncertainty or fear during pregnancy, I want to share a list of Bible verses that have been a source of comfort for me. These scriptures are a reminder that even in our most fearful moments, God is with us, guiding and protecting us.
