Team Jesus: We’re Not Competing, We’re Completing

If you’ve been in the birth world for any amount of time, you’ve probably felt it—comparison. Someone else books more births. Another doula has a bigger following. A midwife launches something new, and you wonder if you’re falling behind.

I’ve been there too.

But lately, God’s been reminding me: we’re not competitors. We’re co-laborers. On Team Jesus, there’s no ladder to climb—just a body to build up.

When one of us wins, we all win.

I’ve seen this truth play out through Christian Doulas and Birth Workers of Michigan, the community I co-founded. What started as a handful of us just wanting connection has grown into a network of 50+ doulas, midwives, and birth workers across Michigan (and growing fast!). It’s proof that unity doesn’t just bless hearts—it blesses whole communities of families we serve.

When we show up for each other—share clients, pray for one another, celebrate each birth, and fill in when someone needs rest—we’re living out what Jesus meant when He said we are the body of Christ.

This is what drives me in my own doula work too. Every birth I attend—whether it’s at home, at Corewell, or at the Karmanos Center for Natural Birth—I’m reminded that this isn’t about building my name. It’s about serving families with gentleness, peace, and presence… and pointing them to the God who made birth beautiful.

And honestly? That’s the message I love to share when I speak to birth workers, moms’ groups, or churches. We can cheer each other on. We can rest in our callings. We can drop the competition and start completing one another—because that’s where the Kingdom grows.
