Thinking about hiring a doula for your birth but unsure about what they actually do? Let me break it down for you!
As a doula, my role is to provide emotional, mental, and physical support and advocacy throughout your birth journey. Here’s what you can expect:
Personalized Support Just for You
I work independently and am focused entirely on you—not the hospital or your caregiver. My mission is to help you achieve the birth you envision. We’ll meet before your due date to discuss your birth preferences, concerns about interventions, pain management, and overall goals.
Comprehensive Pregnancy Support
During pregnancy, I offer support and encouragement. Have questions before your next doctor visit? I provide information and help you make informed decisions, though I never give medical advice or contradict your provider's guidance.
On-Call Availability
From 38-42 weeks, I’m on call and ready to assist. If I’m at another birth or unavailable for any reason, I have a backup doula to ensure you’re always covered.
In-Labor Assistance
During labor, I provide emotional support with calming reminders and breathing techniques. My training, including Spinning Babies and Bundle Birth Nurses, allows me to suggest effective labor positions. I also bring comfort tools like heat pads and tennis balls to help ease contractions.
I help you stick to your birth plan and navigate any changes, ensuring you’re informed and comfortable with every decision. If plans shift—like needing an IV or facing unexpected complications—I’m there to support you and your partner, helping you stay calm and make informed choices.
Support During Pushing and After Birth
During pushing, I might assist by holding a leg while your partner supports you from above. I cheer you on, remind you of how amazing you are, and help you communicate with your baby after birth. I stay for about an hour postpartum to ensure both you and your baby are stable.
